The Addams Family will once again enjoy a romp on the big screen with a new movie coming in 2019. This film will be completely computer-animated, featuring the vocal talents of Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, and Bette Midler as Grandma. It will also feature a new take on the classic theme song.
This time, the Addams clan will have to go toe-to-toe with the host of a reality television series, hoping to cash in on the eccentricities of their family life. The Addams must grapple with the complexities of the 21st century, rooted in greed, avarice, and self-promotion. Will their family values prove strong enough to meet the challenge?
The show is based on the single-panel cartoons by Charles Addams, which depict a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. The comedy follows 18-year-old Wednesday Addams who is about to marry a “normal boy,” Lucas Beineke, and the parents who are meeting for the first time at dinner at the Addams home.
“What appears to be normal isn’t always normal,” said Director Danielle Miller who is in charge of the district’s theater department. “The family that is so off-put by the Addams wind up learning about real love and themselves through this whole experience. It’s definitely a don’t-judge-a-book-by-its-cover type story.”
Famous recording artists like Kasabian and Mannheim Steamroller have covered the Addams Family theme song for their Halloween-themed albums. Both of the songs alter the original significantly but retain enough of its recognizable melody and whimsy to register with fans.

The Kasabian version changed the name to “The Meighan Family Values,” but it retains the harpsichord and finger-snaps, with the singers singing the classic lyric and adding a few of their own. They’ve also recorded a Ghostbusters theme. The Mannheim Steamroller version is an instrumental and has an extended solo with a pop-funk vibe.
The film is being produced by Gail Berman, Conrad Vernon, Alex Schwartz and Alison O’Brien, with Kevin Miserocchi, Andrew Mittman and Joe Earley serving as the executive producers. Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan have co-directed the film scripted by Matt Lieberman.
The teaser that re-acquaints us with the strange ways of the macabre family has already registered 3,186,925 views on YouTube in a day and is currently trending on the site. The cast members have changed their Twitter profile pictures in time for the teaser’s release and have been tweeting the teaser out.
Midler referred to her other scary movie appearance in Hocus Pocus (1993) as she tweeted that voicing Grand Mama was a “dream come true” for her.
In 1938, the American cartoonist Charles Addams created the Addams Family, intending the characters to appear as cartoons on The New Yorker. In 1964, ABC created the live action sit-com with the charmingly scary family upsetting quite a lot of folks at The New Yorker!
Soon animated versions populated the cartoon channels and in 1991 and 1992, The Addams Family and Addams Family Values released, gaining the franchise widespread popularity and a loyal fan base. The last appearance of the family was when Fox tried recreating the success by releasing The New Addams Family in 1998 and finally October 2019 is the time to meet the Addams again.
Parents need to know that The Addams Family is an animated comedy is based on Charles Addams’ classic cartoons. Morticia (voiced by Charlize Theron), Gomez (Oscar Isaac), Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz), and Pugsley Addams (Finn Wolfhard) move to New Jersey, where they face a town that’s scared to accept their eccentric ways and become the target of a particularly nasty, greedy reality TV host.
Expect some scariness (probably more of the creepy variety) but hopefully also messages about inclusion, uniqueness, family togetherness, and community.
Need to know that while this film is based on the classic 1960s sitcom, it’s a much darker comedy with more sophisticated humor. While the movie is fun, it contains violent images and strong sexual innuendo. It also contains scenes featuring the use of various weapons and torture devices.
Parents also need to know that while the characters are likeable, their behavior is sometimes mean spirited. Wednesday Addams’ sadistic nature is rather disturbing. Parents should exercise caution and may want to preview before allowing tweens to watch.
The macabre Addams Family have a long history tracing back to a highly influential comic strip by Charles Addams in the New Yorker, starting in 1938. With a very popular 1960s TV adaptation and a 1970s animated show, this first live action film (released in 1991) has a rich amount of source material to draw from and angles to choose.
What ‘The Addams Family’ does is take kitsch comedy with larger than life characterisation provided by a stellar cast, all performing at their absolute best.
And what a cast. The late, great Raúl Juliá is the walking epitome of Gomez Addams. Playing the role with the energy of a man loving every second, his Gomez is flamboyant and passionate; exaggerated and suave. His wife, Morticia (superbly realised by Anjelica Huston) is the dark and mysterious counterpoint to Gomez’s extravagant excess.
A young Christina Ricci was made for the deadpan and morbidly obsessed Wednesday (who, for her efforts. is rewarded with a much large role with killer dialogue to suit in the later sequel) and Christopher Lloyd, well, goes full on Christopher Lloyd, making his Uncle Fester a whirling dervish of nerves, emotions, internal battles, and glorious realisations.
Everything about the big screen debut for ‘The Addams Family’ is designed to bring to the forefront the gothic and yet full of life appeal of its titular stars. Director Sonnenfeld (best known for the equally vivacious Men In Black franchise) makes sure that the cinematography plays to the quirky strengths of the script: such as always having the black,
alluring figure of Morticia in shade except for her eyes, and throwing in all the bent camera angles and zoom-ins possible to capture every possible nuance from the fabulous performances of the cast. The dialogue delights in taking uptight ‘normal’ people and rubbing them against the dark eccentricity of the Addams’ and watching the sparks of snappy one-liners zap out.
It could be argued that ‘The Addams Family’ movie is too over the top and a little light on plot. In the hands of lesser performers, a less witty script or a less confident director then this could have fallen over itself. But with all the elements in fine-tuned balance and there always being something to enjoy on screen, this movie is a triumph of showcasing the uniquely counter-culture and yet family-centric phenomenon that is The Addams Family.
The Addams Family is a group of fictional characters created by American cartoonist Charles Addams. Addams Family characters include Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday and Pugsley.
The Addamses are a satirical inversion of the ideal American family; an eccentric, wealthy clan who delight in the macabre and are unaware that people find them bizarre or frightening. They originally appeared as a series of single panel cartoons, published in The New Yorker between 1938 and Addams’s 1988 death. They have since been adapted to other media, including television series (both live action and animated), films, video games, and a musical.
Gomez Addams is perfectly played by accomplished actor and comedian Jesse Sharp. His Gomez is a snappily dressed Latin charmer with blazingly white teeth, a rolling accent and a dreamy voice. He is also a devoted husband and father who is stuck between a skull and hard place (ba dum dum) in the story. Shh…don’t tell anyone, but Gomez is my new imaginary husband!
Uncle Fester, who serves as a narrator of sorts during the show, is played by Shaun Rice. Thanks to Rice’s sweet, weird-in-a-good-way take on Uncle Fester, I feel like I could finally be in the same room with Gomez’s brother and not feel completely creeped out.
In this production, Uncle Fester is in love with the Moon and this long distance relationship is the source of one of my favorite numbers in the show, “The Moon and Me,” and one of my favorite moments during the finale.
The always effervescent Lurch is played by Dan Olson. I wish I could spill the beans about Lurch, but I’m not going to! You see, I don’t want to deprive you of the treat of spontaneously gasping, cheering and erupting in mad applause.
Sam Primack was in the role of Pugsley the night we saw the show. Out of all the Addams Family characters, I like Puglsey the least. Primack, however, was sweet, adorable and – dare I say it? – loveable! With his pet lizard and very special Monster Under the Bed, you can almost imagine that he is a regular little boy.
Grandma, who may or may not be a stranger squatting in the attic, doesn’t have a large part. Amanda Burton makes the most of her moments in the spotlight, though and chimes in with some pretty fantastic one-liners.
The Beinekes – Mr. and Mrs. Normal – are played by Blair Anderson (Alice) and Mark Poppleton (Mal). They are the perfect representatives of a normal couple – complete with built up resentment, annoying habits and distance between them. Anderson perfectly embodies the walking Hallmark card Alice has become and Poppleton is the spitting image of a repressed and snarkeyJames Lipton.
Rounding out the cast are the Ancestors – the ghosts of Addams’ past. The assembled members are a great team and support the leads brilliantly.
The Addams Family premiered 25 years ago. Both it and its sequel, Addams Family Values, are strange films. Not because they’re about the Addamses, but because they’re best enjoyed as vignettes—and that aspect actually makes them one of the most faithful movie adaptations out there.
The roots of the Addams Family was never in grand plots or large, overarching ones. It started as a series of single panel cartoons in The New Yorker, followed by the TV show in the ‘60s. It shouldn’t really be a surprise that the best parts of the 1991 movie are things that can be taken in isolation.
This Halloween season promises to be especially creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky because our favorite unconventional family, the Addams, are coming back to our screens. Except this year, they’re coming in the form of 3D animations and the trailer looks so good, we honestly can’t wait.
Although it’s hard to say how this cast will do justice to Anjelica Huston’s Morticia and Christina Ricci’s Wednesday, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate Halloween 2019 than with the voices of Charlize Theron and Nick Kroll, among others, animating these timeless characters.
And because we’re so excited for the release, we wanted to take this first chance to look at the cast of the new Addams Family before we catch the movie IRL early next October.
Based on the cartoon and ’60s TV series, The Addams Family became an instant hit on its release in 1991, a year which also saw Beauty and the Beast, Terminator 2 and Oscar darling The Silence of the Lambs in cinemas.
They were creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, and altogether ooky – and audiences all over the world couldn’t get enough of Morticia, Gomez and the gang.
So much so that, just two years later, a sequel hit movie theatres. Although critically well-received, Addams Family Values took less than half its predecessor at the box office (and cost twice as much to make). Addams Family Reunion, meanwhile… let’s not go there.
